Just as happened at Wimbledon 2009, top-seeded Dinara Safina is out early at the 2009 U.S. Open. This time she lost to little-known Czech teenager Petra Kvitova in three sets.
Dinara Safina is the No. 1 seed in the women's draw for the 2009 U.S. Open. That shouldn't be a surprise - most tournaments follow the world rankings when handing out seeds, and Safina is currently ranked No. 1. But Serena Williams is the defending champion, and won Wimbledon a month ago.
Dinara Safina was the No. 1 seed at Wimbledon 2009, and she advanced through the draw to the semifinals. There she ran into Venus Williams, and Venus must've been flawless. Because Safina got whupped the way you don't normally see top seeds getting whupped - 6-1, 6-0. Ouch.
The year 2008 has been a kind one to Dinara Safina. As this is written, she's No. 3 in the WTA singles rankings. Safina reached six finals in 2008, winning four tournament titles.
Another upset at the French Open. No. 1 seed Maria Sharapova is eliminated by the player above, a fellow Russian, Dinara Safina. It's not that big of an upset, really. Safina is ranked No. 14, and she had a 12-2 record on clay in 2008 going into the Sharapova match. Clay is definitely Safina's best surface.
