Heather Watson is the 19-year-old tennis player who almost beat Maria Sharapova in the first round of the 2011 US Open.
Watson is British but has trained in Florida for many years. She won the title at the 2009 US Open Juniors tournament, as well as a gold medal at the 2008 Commonwealth Games.
Entering the 2011 USO, Watson had won three singles titles on the ITF circuit. She was ranked No. 104 in the world.
Against Sharapova, Watson won the first set 6-3 before losing the next two 5-7, 3-6.
